Diseases do not pick their victims; therefore it is as crucial to attend screenings and examinations under the age of 40 as at an older age. However, many people do not recognise this and only visit their doctors if they experience discomfort. We recommend three screening packages for young women; these are based on the standard package and are extended according to the risk groups that might affect the individual patient.
The screening packages for young women include examinations that take the characteristics of the female body into account as well as the age and the lifestyle of the patients.
The examinations, included in the standard package, assess the status of the abdominal and pelvic organs (liver, kidneys, pancreas, uterus, ovaries, urinary bladder, spleen, abdominal and pelvic bladders), the current status of the thyroid and, with a traditional X-ray, the chest (lung). They are complemented by laboratory examinations (liver function, kidney functions, blood lipids, blood glucose, complete blood count, ions, iron, transferrin, TSH, urinalysis). The ultrasound and laboratory examination (TSH), examination of the thyroid was added to the package to monitor the functioning of the thyroid and to control the known thyroid diseases since nowadays there are quite a lot of thyroid disease patients who do not experience symptoms for several years.
Our extra screening package contains the gynaecological transvaginal ultrasound and the carotid arteries ultrasound examination, compared to the standard package.
– With the help of the transvaginal ultrasound we can get an accurate picture on the condition of the uterus, the ovaries and their surroundings.
– The carotid arteries Doppler ultrasound examination is the most efficient screening examination to monitor the status of the arteries. It is essential in case of smoking, stress, high blood pressure disease and diabetes as arteries might be affected by these conditions.
Many young women smoke and do not pay attention to the high occurrence ratio of lung cancer in smokers, therefore, monitoring the status of the lungs is highly important. Due to smoking the risk of chronic bronchitis, emphysema and lung cancer is increasing. About 80% of lung cancer patients are smokers.
We added a chest CT examination to our screening package for smokers. This examination is performed with 1/3 of the original radiation dose, concentrating on the lung tissue. During the examination thin-layer section images can be taken of the entire lung with one breath; by doing so, plexuses of only a few millimetres in size can be recognised, their location and size can be accurately assessed. Since the radiation beam comes from more directions, it can examine the most hidden areas (area behind the ribs, apex, thoracic inlet) which are usually less “visible” for the traditional X-ray.
